You earn a California real estate salesperson license from the Department of Real Estate. That means three approved college-level courses, a 150-question state exam, a Live Scan fingerprint check, and a responsible broker to work under. If you file the exam and license together, the DRE fees total $450, and California residents pay the $49 fingerprint fee straight to the Live Scan provider (DRE, Fees page, checked September 24, 2026).

The license is the same statewide. Nothing extra is required to sell in Pittsburg. What changes is the trip to the exam and what your first clients here will ask you. Here’s the path, step by step.

Am I eligible?

You must be at least 18 to be issued a license. The DRE also requires applicants to be honest and truthful, and it says a criminal conviction may result in a license being denied (DRE, Requirements to Apply for a Real Estate Salesperson License, checked September 24, 2026). Answer every question on the application fully. An omission can hurt more than the history itself.

Live outside California? The same DRE page has a separate section for out-of-state applicants.

What classes do I need?

Real Estate Principles, Real Estate Practice, and one elective from the DRE’s list. The DRE calls these college-level courses. Elective choices include Legal Aspects of Real Estate, Real Estate Finance, Real Estate Appraisal, Property Management, Escrows, and Common Interest Developments, among others (DRE, Requirements page, checked September 24, 2026).

Since January 1, 2024, the Practice course has to include implicit bias and fair housing, with a role-play where you act as both the consumer and the agent. Take that one seriously. Fair housing rules are how you protect your clients and your license on every single deal.

Where can I take the courses?

Community colleges and private real estate schools both offer them, online and in person. Before you pay tuition anywhere, check that each course meets the DRE’s college-level rules on its Requirements page. That one step saves you from retaking a class.

What will it cost?

Here’s the DRE side, from its Fees page (checked September 24, 2026). The DRE says its fees are nonrefundable.

Item Fee
Salesperson exam $100
Salesperson license $350
Exam and license filed together (RE 435) $450 total to the DRE
Live Scan fingerprints, California residents $49 to the provider
First rescheduled exam $40
Re-examination $100

Course tuition is separate and set by the school you pick.

What’s the exam like, and what score passes?

Three hours, 150 multiple-choice questions, and you need at least 70% to pass (DRE, Taking the Exam page, checked September 24, 2026). The DRE asks you to arrive 30 minutes early. If you pass, the DRE doesn’t tell you your score. If you don’t, you get a breakdown by subject so you know what to study.

Treat practice tests like the real thing: timed, no notes, in one sitting.

Where do I take the exam if I live in Pittsburg?

Oakland is the closest DRE exam site. It’s in the Elihu M. Harris State Office Building, 1515 Clay Street, Room 703, 7th floor (DRE, Exam Sites page, checked September 24, 2026). The DRE also tests in Fresno, La Palma, Sacramento and San Diego.

You can ride BART the whole way. From Pittsburg/Bay Point, a weekday morning train is scheduled to reach 12th St. Oakland City Center in 42 minutes, and the adult Clipper fare is $6.30 each way. From Pittsburg Center it’s 54 minutes and $6.50, with a walk across the transfer platform (BART schedule and fare data for Thursday, October 1, 2026, checked September 24, 2026). Map the walk from 12th Street to Clay Street before test day, so the only thing on your mind is the exam.

What happens once I pass?

The license comes after your fingerprints clear. The DRE says it cannot issue a license until it receives your fingerprint response, and if you filed the exam alone, you then send the Salesperson License Application (RE 202), a Live Scan Service Request (RE 237) and the license fee (DRE, Once You Pass the Examination page, checked September 24, 2026). Then you choose a broker. You can hold a license without one, but the DRE says a salesperson without a responsible broker can’t do anything that requires a license (DRE, Requirements page, checked September 24, 2026).

That’s the decision that shapes your first year more than any class.

What should a first-year Pittsburg agent learn first?

How to price. In August 2026, Pittsburg’s median sale price was $590,609, basically flat at up 0.1% from a year earlier. Over half the homes sold (55.5%) went above list, but 34.3% took a price drop, and the median home sold in 23 days (Redfin, Pittsburg housing market page, August 2026, checked September 24, 2026). Listing a home at the right number is the skill your first sellers will judge you on.

Two more things your first buyers will ask:

  • Which BART station? Pittsburg/Bay Point on West Leland Road, or Pittsburg Center on Railroad Avenue, which connects to regular BART at a transfer platform (BART station info, checked September 24, 2026). Know which one a listing is closer to.
  • What’s that industrial site? The county’s Hazardous Materials Program, now on the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District’s website, keeps a public list of Pittsburg facilities under the state’s CalARP program (checked September 25, 2026). Send buyers there, and send health questions to a doctor or Contra Costa Health, never your own opinion.

Learning those next to agents who handle them every week beats learning on a live client. If you’re comparing teams, start with our page on which real estate team to join to sell homes in Pittsburg and East County.

Nobody can promise what you’ll earn. A good team can shorten the learning curve.
