Several agencies, none of them a city. Contra Costa County issues permits and fixes roads, the volunteer Crockett-Carquinez Fire Protection District covers fire, the Crockett Community Services District runs the sewer system and parks, EBMUD supplies water, and the County Sheriff handles law enforcement.
Here is who to call for each one, so the first leak, permit or pothole after you move in is not a mystery.
Why is there no “City of Crockett”?
Crockett never incorporated, so the county government fills the role a city would. You may still see “City of Crockett” on a listing or even a public website. It is not a city.
Crockett’s elected voice on county matters is the District 5 County Supervisor, Shanelle Scales-Preston, who took office in January 2025 (Contra Costa County, District 5 page, checked September 24, 2026). Unlike several nearby unincorporated towns, Crockett has no Municipal Advisory Council; the county’s list of advisory councils does not include one (Contra Costa County, public meetings listings, checked September 25, 2026). The closest thing to a local council is the elected board of the Crockett Community Services District.

Who runs the fire department in Crockett?
A volunteer fire district, not Con Fire. The Crockett-Carquinez Fire Protection District serves Crockett, Port Costa, Tormey and nearby unincorporated land, about 10.9 square miles, from its station at 746 Loring Avenue. The County Board of Supervisors sits as its governing board, and a local advisory commission meets on the third Thursday of the month at 7:00 p.m. The district in its current form dates to 1967, and the original district to 1891 (Contra Costa LAFCO, Directory of Local Agencies, May 2025).
That is a real difference from Rodeo, which moved into Con Fire in July 2025. If fire service is a big factor for you, read the advisory commission agendas on the county’s meeting portal, and ask your insurance agent whether the fire district changes your quote.
What does the Crockett Community Services District do?
Sewer and recreation, for Crockett and Port Costa, since 2006. Its sanitary department handles sewer service in Crockett, and Port Costa has its own separate sanitary department inside the district. Its recreation side runs the community center at 850 Pomona Street, the swimming pool, Alexander Park and the bocce and tennis courts. Its maintenance crew also keeps up Memorial Hall, the downtown plaza and the green decorative street lights (Crockett Community Services District website, checked September 25, 2026).
The board is elected and meets the fourth Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the community center. If sewer rates or park hours matter to you, that is the meeting to watch.
Where does Crockett’s wastewater go?
To a treatment plant shared with the sugar refinery. Wastewater from the district is treated at the Philip F. Meads Water Treatment Plant on Loring Avenue, which C&H Sugar and the district use jointly, and the treated water is discharged to the Carquinez Strait. The plant’s permit from the Regional Water Board was being reissued in 2026 (CEQAnet notice 2026080637, received August 19, 2026). Our separate page on the C&H refinery explains why that link matters.
Who do I call about my street?
County Public Works, at (925) 313-2000. A current example: the county’s 2026 Crockett and Port Costa Overlays and Curb Ramps project is a $1,723,095 job paid with SB1 gas tax road funds, awarded to Carone and Company on June 9, 2026. The county schedules curb ramps from August 31 to October 22, 2026, repaving from October 5 to 29, and striping from October 30 to November 10, 2026 (Contra Costa County, project page, checked September 25, 2026). Expect lane closures on the streets being paved.
The green decorative lights downtown are the services district’s job. Other street lights are maintained by County Public Works under County Service Area L-100; report an outage at (925) 313-2000 (Crockett Community Services District, public utilities page, checked September 25, 2026).
Does Crockett have its own transfer tax?
No. Only the county’s documentary transfer tax applies, $0.55 per $500 of value, or $1.10 per $1,000. Some cities, such as Richmond, add their own city transfer tax on top; Crockett is not a city, so it has none (Contra Costa County, transfer tax FAQ, checked September 25, 2026). Who pays it is negotiable between buyer and seller. For how it fits your own taxes, ask a tax professional.
