What is the commute from Pittsburg to San Francisco?

It depends on which of Pittsburg’s two BART stations you use. From Pittsburg/Bay Point, a weekday morning Yellow Line train reaches Embarcadero in 54 minutes for $8.60 on an adult Clipper card. From Pittsburg Center, the same trip takes 66 minutes and $8.85, because you switch trains once on the way (BART schedule and fare data for Thursday, October 1, 2026, checked September 24, 2026).

So the real question for a Pittsburg buyer isn’t “is there BART?” It’s which station the house is closer to, and whether that 12 minutes each way matters to you. Here’s the whole picture.

Why does Pittsburg have two BART stations?

Because the line changes trains here. Pittsburg/Bay Point, at 1700 West Leland Road near Bailey Road, is the last stop for regular BART cars. East of it, BART runs a separate service called BART to Antioch on Diesel Multiple Unit trains, with Pittsburg Center at 2099 Railroad Avenue as its first stop (BART station info for both stations, checked September 24, 2026).

BART to Antioch opened on Saturday, May 26, 2018. It runs 10 miles in the median of Highway 4 and added two stations, Pittsburg Center and Antioch (BART, BART to Antioch project page, checked September 24, 2026).

How does the transfer platform work?

You step off one train and walk across the platform to the other. The transfer platform sits just east of Pittsburg/Bay Point station, and BART says it’s only reachable by train. There’s no entrance from the street (BART, Pittsburg Center station info and BART to Antioch project page, checked September 24, 2026).

In practice, that means a Pittsburg Center rider heading to the city boards the diesel train on Railroad Avenue, rides to the platform, and crosses to a regular BART train. The schedule accounts for it. BART’s weekday data shows Pittsburg Center to Pittsburg/Bay Point at 11 minutes.

How long is the ride to San Francisco from each station?

About 55 minutes from Pittsburg/Bay Point and a little over an hour from Pittsburg Center. These are BART’s scheduled weekday morning trips for Thursday, October 1, 2026, all to Embarcadero (BART schedule data, checked September 24, 2026):

From Leaves Arrives Embarcadero Scheduled ride
Pittsburg Center 7:34 a.m. 8:40 a.m. 66 min
Pittsburg/Bay Point 7:37 a.m. 8:31 a.m. 54 min
Pittsburg/Bay Point 7:46 a.m. 8:40 a.m. 54 min
Pittsburg Center 7:54 a.m. 9:00 a.m. 66 min
Pittsburg/Bay Point 7:57 a.m. 8:51 a.m. 54 min
Pittsburg/Bay Point 8:06 a.m. 9:00 a.m. 54 min
Pittsburg Center 8:14 a.m. 9:20 a.m. 66 min

Notice the spacing. In that window, Pittsburg/Bay Point has a train about every 9 to 11 minutes. Pittsburg Center has one every 20 minutes. Miss one on Railroad Avenue and you wait longer.

Coming home is about the same. A 5:20 p.m. train from Embarcadero is scheduled into Pittsburg/Bay Point at 6:13 p.m. and Pittsburg Center at 6:25 p.m. (same BART data). Trains and times change, so check the BART trip planner at bart.gov for your actual day.

What about driving Highway 4 into the city?

You can, but budget for it. From Pittsburg you head west on Highway 4 (State Route 4) past Bay Point and Concord, then pick your way to the Bay Bridge. Which freeways you use after Highway 4 depends on where you’re going in the city.

The fixed cost is the toll. A two-axle car pays $8.50 on the Bay Bridge in 2026. Drivers with a FasTrak tag go to $9.00 in 2027, then $9.50 in 2028, $10.00 in 2029 and $10.50 in 2030. The half-price commute-hour carpool discount needs three people in the car (MTC, “New Bridge Toll Rates Now in Effect,” January 2, 2026). Add gas and San Francisco parking on top.

How long does the drive take?

We’re not going to guess. There’s no official typical drive time from Pittsburg to San Francisco, and Highway 4 traffic swings a lot by hour and direction. Open 511.org, the Bay Area’s official traffic site, at the hour you’d actually leave and watch the live speeds on Highway 4 and the routes after it. Do that for a week of mornings and you’ll know more than any number we could print.

How do I pick a Pittsburg home with the commute in mind?

Measure every house to both stations, not just the closer-looking one. A home off Railroad Avenue might be a short drive to Pittsburg Center, but if you’d rather catch the more frequent trains at Pittsburg/Bay Point, check how long it takes to get to West Leland Road in morning traffic.

Then ride it once for real. Leave at your normal time on a weekday, park or take the bus, and time it door to desk. Do the trip home too. That one day tells you whether the house works.
