Expect a long average commute. Rio Vista workers averaged 40.3 minutes to get to work, and about 78% drove alone (U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020 to 2024 5-year estimates, Rio Vista city). Rio Vista’s main road is State Route 12, which crosses the Sacramento River on the Rio Vista Bridge.

The bridge still gets work. Caltrans ran full weekend closures during a $27.2 million rehab in 2025, and an overnight lane restriction as recently as July 2026. Here’s the record, and how to plan around it.

How long is the average commute from Rio Vista?

About 40 minutes each way on average. The Census Bureau’s latest five-year survey puts Rio Vista’s mean travel time to work at 40.3 minutes, with a margin of error of 4.6 minutes (ACS 2020 to 2024, table DP03, checked September 25, 2026). Among the city’s roughly 3,590 workers:

How Rio Vista workers got to work Share
Drove alone 77.9%
Carpooled 4.6%
Worked from home 12.4%
Public transit 0.0% (estimate)

That’s an average across every job, near and far. Your own trip depends on where you work. The honest test is to drive it from the street you’re looking at, on a weekday, at the hour you’d leave.

Why does everything run through Highway 12?

Because it’s the main road in and out. SR 12 runs west from Rio Vista toward Suisun City and Fairfield, and east across the Sacramento River on the Rio Vista Bridge toward the Delta and Lodi. Caltrans calls the bridge a moveable bridge that serves both vehicle and marine traffic (Caltrans District 3, SR 12 Rio Vista Bridge upgrade project page, checked September 25, 2026).

“Moveable” matters. The bridge lifts for river traffic, and the federal drawbridge rule for the Sacramento River names the Rio Vista bridge drawtender as the contact for some openings (33 CFR 117.189, checked September 25, 2026). A lift can hold up traffic for a bit. Build a cushion into anything time sensitive.

Is the Rio Vista Bridge still closing?

It has closed a lot, and we couldn’t confirm the big project is finished. Here’s the record:

  • The rehab project. Caltrans’s $27.2 million rehabilitation of the Rio Vista Bridge (Helen Madere Memorial Bridge) replaced the deck surface, rails and approach slabs and added an ADA ramp. It needed several full weekend closures because the bridge is too narrow to fit heavy equipment and traffic at once (Caltrans District 3 news releases, June 18 and July 17, 2025).
  • The detour. Caltrans warned that detours to Sacramento County during full closures could add up to two hours (Caltrans, June 18, 2025).
  • The schedule slipped. Caltrans expected the work to finish in spring 2026, later saying late spring 2026. A 55-hour weekend closure planned for October 2025 was postponed for weather with no new date set at the time (Caltrans release, July 17, 2025; City of Rio Vista, Caltrans 55-Hour Full Bridge Closure notice, October 22, 2025).
  • Still no completion notice. We found no Caltrans notice that the rehab was complete as of September 25, 2026.
  • Maintenance goes on. Caltrans Maintenance ran one-way traffic control on the bridge from 7 p.m. July 16, 2026 to 5 a.m. the next morning for deck maintenance (Solano Transportation Authority, Caltrans notice, July 16, 2026).

A separate $19.3 million Caltrans project to upgrade the bridge’s electrical and mechanical systems started October 10, 2022 (Caltrans District 3 project page, checked September 25, 2026). That page doesn’t show a completion date we could confirm.

How do I find out about closures before they happen?

Check two places before you drive, and sign up for one:

  1. Caltrans QuickMap (quickmap.dot.ca.gov) shows current closures and lane work on SR 12.
  2. Caltrans District 3 news (dot.ca.gov) posts planned bridge closures, usually days ahead.
  3. The Solano Transportation Authority news page (sta.ca.gov) reposts Caltrans notices for Solano County roads, including the Rio Vista Bridge.

If you work across the river, ask your employer now how a closure day would work. A plan made early beats a two-hour detour made late.

Is there a bus from Rio Vista?

Yes, on weekdays. The city’s Rio Vista Delta Breeze runs deviated fixed-route service within Rio Vista and to Isleton, Fairfield and Suisun City (City of Rio Vista, Delta Breeze page, checked September 25, 2026). 511.org lists weekday service from 5:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. with connections at the Fairfield Transportation Center, the Suisun/Fairfield Amtrak station, and Antioch and Pittsburg/Bay Point BART, and no weekend or holiday service (511.org, Rio Vista Delta Breeze page, checked September 25, 2026).

Deviated fixed route means the bus can pick you up off its regular route if you arrange it. The city says the Delta Breeze also ran an evening circulator shuttle until 8:30 p.m. in June, July and August. Call (707) 374-2878 for current schedules and fares.

Are there plans to change Highway 12 through Rio Vista?

There have been. In April 2022 the Solano Transportation Authority and Caltrans presented a Rio Vista Complete Streets update for SR 12 at a public meeting at City Hall. Topics included bike and pedestrian improvements, landscaping, and acceleration and deceleration lanes plus a left turn pocket at Church Road (City of Rio Vista, meeting notice, April 27, 2022). STA also runs a State Route 12 Corridor Subcommittee that recommends studies and improvements for the highway to the STA Board (sta.ca.gov, checked September 25, 2026).

We couldn’t confirm a current construction date for the Complete Streets work. Ask the city’s Public Works Department at (707) 374-6451 where it stands.

How far is Rio Vista from the airports?

The city puts Sacramento International Airport at 50 miles and Oakland International at 60 miles (City of Rio Vista, About Rio Vista page, checked September 25, 2026). Rio Vista also has its own municipal airport with a 4,200-foot runway, per the same page.
