Mostly, the river. Rio Vista sits on the Sacramento River, so the big draws are boating, fishing and shoreline parks, with Sandy Beach Park just south of town and Brannan Island State Recreation Area a few miles across the bridge. Add a small Main Street, a public golf course and a fall calendar anchored by the 78th Rio Vista Bass Derby and Festival, October 2 to 4, 2026 (Rio Vista Chamber of Commerce calendar, checked September 25, 2026).
It’s a quiet town, not a big-city menu. Here’s what’s actually there, with hours and fees you can check.
Where can I get on the river in Rio Vista?
Three places, close together:
- Sandy Beach Park and Campground (Solano County) sits on the river just south of town. Day use runs 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, with no entry in the last hour, and the boat launch is open 24 hours. It has 42 campsites with power and water. Swimming is not allowed because of strong currents and sudden drop-offs, and there’s no lifeguard (Solano County Parks, Sandy Beach Park page, checked September 25, 2026). The county’s 2024 fee sheet lists parking at $6 off-peak and $8 peak, and $15 to launch a boat with parking.
- The public boat launch downtown puts you on the river a short walk from Main Street.
- Brannan Island State Recreation Area is on Highway 160, a few miles south of Rio Vista in Sacramento County. It’s open sunrise to one hour after sunset, with a ten-lane launch ramp, more than 140 campsites, swimming and picnic areas, and no lifeguards. Day use is $10 per vehicle and boat launching is $7 (California State Parks, Brannan Island SRA page, checked September 25, 2026).
The current is real here. Read the posted rules, wear a life jacket, and check conditions before you launch.

| Date (2026) | Event |
|---|---|
| October 2 to 4 | 78th Rio Vista Bass Derby and Festival |

| October 30, 4 to 6 p.m. | Halloween on Main (City of Rio Vista) |

The Bass Derby’s 2026 press release says there are no Chamber fireworks this year and the event is focused on the fishing tournament (bassfestival.com, checked September 25, 2026). Check the Chamber’s site for times and any street closures before you go.
Is there a farmers market?
Yes, seasonally, on Main Street. The Rio Vista Farmers Market is run by the Rio Vista Downtown Association (rvfarmersmarket.com, checked September 25, 2026). Its posted 2026 dates have already passed, and the site didn’t show a clear day and hours for next season, so check there before you go.
Where can I play golf or swim?
- The Golf Club at Rio Vista is an 18-hole course designed by Ted Robinson Sr., per the city’s golf page. It’s owned by Trilogy at Rio Vista, operated by CourseCo and open to the public, per Trilogy’s site (City of Rio Vista, Golfing page, and mytrv.org, checked September 25, 2026).
- Simonsen Swim Center is the city pool. Its 2026 season began June 3, with open swim, lap swim and water aerobics on a posted schedule (City of Rio Vista, City Pool page, checked September 25, 2026). The city posts a 2026 fee schedule on the same page.
What about history and museums?
Two good ones:
- Rio Vista Museum. The city says it first opened during the Bass Derby in October 1975, with artifacts from the surrounding area, and that volunteers keep it running (City of Rio Vista, Rio Vista Museum page, checked September 25, 2026). The museum’s site lists hours of Saturday and Sunday, 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., and a phone number of (707) 374-5169 (riovistamuseum.com, checked September 25, 2026).
- Western Railway Museum. On Highway 12 west of town, at 5848 State Highway 12 in Suisun City, on the site of Rio Vista Junction, a stop on the old Sacramento Northern. It’s open Saturdays and Sundays, 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with trains at 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. Adult admission is $19 and children’s is $16 (Western Railway Museum, wrm.org, checked September 25, 2026).
The city also publishes a Bridge to Beach Trail brochure and a self-guided walking tour on its Community pages.
Where else can I go outdoors nearby?
The city’s Regional Parks page points to Sandy Beach, Brannan Island, the Grizzly Island Wildlife Area (California Department of Fish and Wildlife), Lynch Canyon Open Space Park and Lake Solano County Park (City of Rio Vista, Regional Parks page, checked September 25, 2026). Grizzly Island, Lynch Canyon and Lake Solano are a drive, so check each one’s hours and fees on its own site.
What are the wind turbines outside town?
Wind farms. SMUD says 10 wind facilities operate in the Solano wind resource area, and its own Solano wind farm covers about 6,000 acres (SMUD, Solano 5 Wind Repower Project page, checked September 25, 2026). You’ll see them on the drive in. The wind that powers them is part of daily life in Rio Vista too, so check a home’s yard, patio and garage door on a breezy afternoon before you buy.
What are the tradeoffs of a small river town?
Fewer choices close by. For big shopping trips and specialty medical care, plan on driving to a larger city. Most things run through Highway 12 and the Rio Vista Bridge, and weekend events and bridge work can slow traffic. If daily errands matter a lot to you, time those drives from the streets you’re considering.
