Mostly, get outside. Mount Diablo State Park’s Mitchell Canyon entrance has a Clayton address, and the city’s landscape district maintains 27 miles of public trails and about 515 acres of open space (City of Clayton, Measures M and N FAQ #2, Question 6, checked September 25, 2026). Downtown is small and hosts a handful of big street events each year.

Where can I hike in Clayton?
Start at Mitchell Canyon. The staging area is at 96 Mitchell Canyon Road, at the end of Mitchell Canyon Road south of Clayton Road. The vehicle day-use fee at Mitchell Canyon is $6, cash or check only, though the park says special rates may apply at peak times and on weekends. Gates open at 8 am and close at sunset, and a small visitor center is open weekends and some holidays from 8 am to 4 pm. Trails from there range from easy to difficult (California State Parks, Mount Diablo State Park page, checked September 25, 2026).
You can’t drive to the summit from this side. From Mitchell Canyon you walk it.
Closer to home, the city’s trail network links neighborhoods to open space. That’s the 27 miles of public trails the landscape district maintains, along with about 2,871 street trees and the fountain at Oakhurst Boulevard and Clayton Road (City of Clayton, Measures M and N FAQ #2, Question 6).

A few Oktoberfest details worth knowing. Parking and admission are free. Free parking is at the Clayton Community Library, 6125 Clayton Road, and at Diablo View Middle School, 300 Diablo View Lane, with a free shuttle from the school (CBCA, Clayton Oktoberfest page, checked September 25, 2026).
Holidays in The Grove runs a holiday program from 5 to 6:30 pm, with the tree lighting at the main gazebo (CBCA, Holidays in The Grove page, checked September 25, 2026).
What else does Clayton host during the year?
Two more to watch for:
- Concerts in The Grove. The city runs a free summer concert series on Saturday evenings in The Grove. Its page posts the season lineup when it’s set (City of Clayton, Concerts in The Grove page, checked September 25, 2026).
- Art and Wine Festival. The CBCA lists its Clayton Art and Wine Festival as coming in April 2027, with no exact date posted yet (CBCA home page, checked September 25, 2026).
The CBCA also runs bocce and cornhole leagues at the Ipsen Family Bocce Park (same source).
What is The Grove?
The downtown park where most of those events happen. It’s a public park of about one acre between Main and Center Streets, paid for by its own small parcel tax, $26.05 per residential parcel for 2026-27 (NBS, CFD 2006-1 Downtown Park Annual Report, June 2026, checked September 25, 2026). Around it are downtown’s restaurants and shops. For bigger shopping trips, you’ll drive to Concord or Walnut Creek.
What about the library and parks?
The Clayton Library is at 6125 Clayton Road. It’s open Tuesday noon to 8 pm and Wednesday through Saturday 10 am to 6 pm, and closed Sunday and Monday (Contra Costa County Library, Clayton branch page, checked September 25, 2026). Call (925) 673-0659 for programs.
The city also names Clayton Community Park, Lydia Lane Park, Stranahan Park and North Valley Park among its parks (City of Clayton, Measures M and N FAQ #2, Question 6). Check the city’s website for the features at each one before you go.
Who takes care of Clayton’s trails and open space?
The citywide landscape district, a special parcel tax of $312.84 per residential parcel a year. It pays for trails, open space weed abatement, roadside landscaping and street trees. It does not pay for The Grove or the city’s other named parks (City of Clayton, Measures M and N FAQ #2, Question 6).
That tax expires June 30, 2027 unless voters extend it. Measure N, on the November 3, 2026 ballot, would extend it ten years at $354.45 a year starting July 1, 2027, with possible yearly increases capped at 3%. If it fails, the city says no recurring replacement for the district’s program has been adopted (City Attorney’s Impartial Analysis of Measure N; Measures M and N FAQ #2). We take no position. Partly. On Sunday, October 4, 2026, North Gate, South Gate and Summit roads close to cars from 8 am to 2 pm for the bike event. Mitchell Canyon and Macedo Ranch stay open as usual, and trails and fire roads stay open to visitors, per the Mount Diablo State Park page checked September 25, 2026.
