How bad is the I-80 commute from Vacaville, and is there a bus?

It depends on which way you go. Heading west toward Fairfield and the Bay Area, I-80 is the choke point, and it now has a toll express lane in each direction between Vacaville and Red Top Road. Heading east toward Davis and Sacramento, a new bus left the Vacaville Transportation Center for the first time on August 3, 2026, and fares are free through October 2026.

There is no BART in Vacaville and no train station inside the city. So most people drive, some ride a SolanoExpress bus, and a few drive to the train. Here is each option with its source, and how to test it before you buy.

How busy is I-80 through Vacaville?

Busy enough that the state spent $244 million on it. Caltrans counts about 215,000 vehicles a day at Air Base Parkway in Fairfield, the busiest point on this stretch, and says the freeway there had not been widened since 1973 (Caltrans District 4, Solano I-80 Express Lanes Project page, checked September 24, 2026).

Caltrans also expects traffic between the Bay Area and the Sacramento region to grow 35 percent by 2040 (same page). Plan for the drive to stay a big part of your week.

What we can’t give you is a typical drive time. No official source we found publishes one for Vacaville, and a number off a map app on a Sunday means nothing. The test is at the end of this page.

What do the new express lanes mean for a Vacaville driver?

A faster lane you can pay for, or ride free with enough people in the car. Between 2022 and 2025, Caltrans and the Solano Transportation Authority built 10 miles of new lanes in the I-80 median from Airbase Parkway to Leisure Town Road. The Metropolitan Transportation Commission then joined them with the old carpool lanes toward Red Top Road, making an 18-mile express lane each way. Operations began in December 2025 (Caltrans District 4, checked September 24, 2026).

The rules, per 511.org (checked September 24, 2026):

  • Where: eastbound from Red Top Road in Fairfield to Leisure Town Road in Vacaville, and westbound from Leisure Town Road back to Red Top Road.
  • When: 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week.
  • Who pays: every vehicle needs a FasTrak tag. Solo drivers pay the full toll. Two-person carpools pay half with a FasTrak Flex set to 2. Carpools of three or more, vanpools and motorcycles ride free with a Flex set to 3+.

Buses use the lanes free too (Caltrans, same page). That matters for the next section.

The express lane ends at Red Top Road. If you work past Fairfield, you still face the Cordelia area and, toward the Bay, a bridge toll on the way home.

Is there a bus from Vacaville to Sacramento or Davis?

Yes, and it’s new. SolanoExpress Route 30 started August 3, 2026, from the Vacaville Transportation Center, with a stop at the Dixon Park and Ride (Vacaville City Coach news post, August 13, 2026).

It runs as two routes (Solano Mobility, Route 30 page, checked September 24, 2026):

  • Route 30D goes to UC Davis, stopping at the Memorial Union near the northeast corner of Hunt Hall, throughout the day.
  • Route 30S goes to downtown Sacramento at peak morning and evening commute times, with stops on Capitol Mall at Front Street, 8th and Capitol, Capitol at 7th, 9th and L Street, and Sacramento Valley Station.

Fares are free through October 2026, and Solano Mobility says riders will hear before fares start. It lists no service on six holidays, including Labor Day and Thanksgiving. Its Route 30 page carries a rider alert for a new schedule effective September 14, 2026, so pull the current times from solanomobility.org or call (800) 535-6883 before you plan a day around it.

Is there a bus from Vacaville toward BART?

Yes. SolTrans Route 40 runs between the Dixon Park and Ride and Concord BART, with stops at the Vacaville Transportation Center, the Fairfield Transportation Center, Suisun Valley Road, the Benicia Park and Ride and North Concord BART (SolTrans, Route 40 schedule effective September 1, 2026, checked September 24, 2026).

On that schedule, the first weekday southbound trip leaves the Vacaville Transportation Center at 4:58 a.m. and is due at Concord BART at 6:09 a.m. Some midday trips start at the Fairfield Transportation Center and skip Vacaville, so read the Vacaville column on the schedule, not just the route. SolTrans adjusted Route 40 on September 1, 2026 to add running time to Concord BART, and in the mornings only southbound trips stop at North Concord (SolTrans news release, August 28, 2026).

One tip. City Coach’s “Beyond Vacaville” page still lists the old SolanoExpress lines by letter (checked September 24, 2026). Go by SolTrans’s current route numbers instead.

Where does FAST fit in?

FAST is Fairfield and Suisun City’s local bus. Its site lists Routes 1, 3, 6, 7 and 8T plus FAST Connect on-demand rides (fasttransit.org, checked September 24, 2026). It does not run local routes in Vacaville. It matters if your job is in Fairfield: take Route 40 to the Fairfield Transportation Center, then connect on FAST.

How do I get around inside Vacaville without a car?

Vacaville City Coach. It runs fixed Routes 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, plus City Coach Direct, an on-demand ride anywhere inside city limits (City Coach home and City Coach Direct pages, checked September 24, 2026).

  • Fixed-route fares: $1.50 adult, $1.25 youth 6 to 18, $0.75 seniors 65 and up or riders with a disability. An adult day pass is $3.25 and an adult monthly pass is $36.00. Cash with exact change or Clipper.
  • City Coach Direct: $3.00 a ride, Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Book through the Ride Pingo app or by calling (707) 449-6000. Clipper is not accepted on Direct.
  • Solano College students ride City Coach free with a current student ID (City Coach Fares page, checked September 24, 2026).

A heads-up before you count on it. On July 31, 2026 the city posted that City Coach service could be affected starting August 3, 2026 by labor negotiations between its bus contractor, Transdev, and the union for its bus operators. That notice said service was operating as scheduled and that riders could see reductions, delays or cancellations if a work stoppage happened (City Coach news post, July 31, 2026). As of September 24, 2026, City Coach had posted no later update on the dispute. Check citycoach.com or call (707) 449-6000 before you rely on a route.

Can I take the train from Vacaville?

Not from inside the city. The nearest Capitol Corridor stop is the Fairfield-Vacaville Hannigan station at 4921 Vanden Road in Fairfield. It is unstaffed with no ticket machine, so buy on your phone first. It has 139 regular parking spaces and 5 accessible spaces (Capitol Corridor, station page, checked September 24, 2026).

Most Vacaville riders will drive there and park. For train times and fares, use capitolcorridor.org.

How do I test the commute before I buy?

Treat it like a job interview for the house. Two weeks, real hours.

  1. Pick the exact address and your work address. Check 511.org or a map app at your real leave time every weekday for two weeks. Write down the worst day, not the best.
  2. Drive it once at that hour. If you’d use the express lane, get a FasTrak first and note what the sign says the toll is.
  3. Ride the bus once. Route 30 is free through October 2026, so a trial costs you nothing but time.
  4. Add up tolls, parking and fares for a month.

Then compare two homes on opposite sides of town. A house near Leisure Town Road starts at the east end of the express lane. A house off Alamo Drive or Browns Valley Parkway starts closer to the Fairfield end. The drive feels different from each.
