How do I commute from Clayton without BART?

Take the bus or drive to Concord BART. Clayton has no BART station, so transit commuters ride County Connection Route 10 on weekdays or Route 310 on weekends to Concord station, about 22 to 24 minutes from the downtown Clayton Library stop, then catch a direct Yellow Line train (County Connection Route 10 and 310 timetables, checked September 25, 2026).

The catch is the bus schedule, not the train. From downtown, the weekday bus to BART runs once an hour until early afternoon, and the last weekday bus from BART back to downtown Clayton leaves at 6:00 pm. Plan around that and the rest is easy.

Where is the closest BART station to Clayton?

Concord station, at 1451 Oakland Avenue in Concord. It’s on the Yellow Line (Antioch to SFO/Millbrae), so trains run straight to downtown San Francisco with no transfer (BART, Concord station page, checked September 25, 2026). From there, everything west on the line is one seat away.

How does the Route 10 bus work from Clayton?

It runs along Clayton Road between downtown Clayton and Concord BART, weekdays from about 5 am to 10 pm. County Connection lists it as every 15 to 30 minutes, but not every trip goes all the way into downtown (County Connection, Route 10 page, checked September 25, 2026). Here’s what the weekday timetable shows at the Clayton Road and Clayton Library stop:

  • Heading to BART: buses leave the library stop at 3 minutes past the hour from 6:03 am to 2:03 pm, then about every 30 minutes from 2:48 pm to 6:33 pm. Most reach Concord BART 22 to 24 minutes later.
  • Heading home: buses from Concord BART reach the library about every 30 minutes in the afternoon, by way of Center Street at Easley Drive and Marsh Creek Road at Bigelow Street. The last one leaves the station at 6:00 pm and gets to the library at 6:27 pm.
  • The in-between trips: extra buses start or end at Washington Boulevard and Clayton Road instead of downtown. That’s why the route looks more frequent on paper than it feels on Main Street.

County Connection lists no Route 10 service on November 26, 2026, December 25, 2026 and January 1, 2027 (same source). Timetables change, so check the route page before your first day.

What does a weekday trip to San Francisco look like?

About an hour and a quarter each way from the library stop. Here are two sample trips built from County Connection’s weekday Route 10 timetable (checked September 25, 2026) and BART’s schedule for Tuesday, October 6, 2026 (BART official schedule data, checked September 25, 2026):

Direction Bus Train Arrive
Morning Leave Clayton Library 7:03 am, reach Concord BART 7:27 am 7:36 am from Concord Embarcadero 8:20 am
Evening Leave Concord BART 6:00 pm 5:12 pm from Embarcadero, reaches Concord 5:55 pm Clayton Library 6:27 pm

That evening connection has five minutes to spare. If you work late, the bus won’t take you home to downtown. You’d drive to the station in the morning instead, or line up a ride from Concord BART.

What if I work in Walnut Creek or Oakland instead?

The same bus gets you to BART, and the train ride is short. From Concord, BART’s weekday schedule shows Walnut Creek 8 minutes away for $2.55 on Clipper and 12th St. Oakland City Center 32 minutes away for $5.35, both with no transfer (BART schedule and fare data for October 6, 2026, checked September 25, 2026).

Walnut Creek is also a direct drive. Ygnacio Valley Road runs from the Clayton Road area southwest toward downtown Walnut Creek and I-680.

Which roads do Clayton drivers use?

Four main ones, depending on where you’re headed:

  • Clayton Road west into Concord, toward Highway 242 and I-680.
  • Ygnacio Valley Road southwest toward Walnut Creek and I-680.
  • Kirker Pass Road north over the hills to Pittsburg and Highway 4.
  • Marsh Creek Road east toward Brentwood.

Headed to San Francisco by car, you’ll also pay the Bay Bridge toll. It’s $8.50 for a two-axle car in 2026 and rises to $9.00 with FasTrak in 2027 (MTC, “New Bridge Toll Rates Now in Effect,” January 2, 2026).

We won’t quote a drive time. No official source publishes a typical one, and it changes by the hour. Open 511.org, the Bay Area’s official traveler information site, at the time you’d actually leave, and look at live speeds on your route. The city also posts road closures during its 2026 paving work (City of Clayton, 2026 Pavement Rehabilitation update, posted August 21, 2026).

How do I test the commute before I buy?

Ride it once for real. Catch the 7:03 am bus at the library stop on a Tuesday or Wednesday, ride to your office, and come home on the 6:00 pm bus from Concord BART. Then do the same trip by car another morning. Two tries will tell you more than any table.
