Rodeo is served by John Swett Unified School District, which runs one public elementary school in Rodeo and a middle school and high school next door in Crockett. The district office is at 400 Parker Avenue in Rodeo, and the district is the only one that can confirm which school goes with a specific address, so call before you write an offer.
Here is who runs what, what the state’s own numbers say, and how to check a house.
Which school district covers Rodeo?
John Swett Unified School District (JSUSD). It is a small K to 12 district with 1,198 students on its 2025 California School Dashboard profile, and its office is at 400 Parker Avenue, Rodeo, phone (510) 245-4300 (California School Dashboard, 2025; JSUSD website, both checked September 24, 2026). Rodeo is an unincorporated part of Contra Costa County with no city government, so the school district, not a city, is the agency that decides school assignments here.
One wrinkle if you are shopping near the Hercules line. The City of Hercules says most of Hercules is in West Contra Costa Unified, but addresses on the border of Hercules and Rodeo are in John Swett Unified (City of Hercules, Local Schools page, checked September 24, 2026). So the town name on a listing does not settle the district. The address does.
Which public schools does John Swett Unified run?
Four, per the district website (checked September 24, 2026). Addresses and grade spans below are from each school’s 2025 Dashboard profile.
- Rodeo Hills Elementary, grades K to 5 on the Dashboard (the district’s 2026 to 2027 enrollment notice lists TK to 5), 534 students, 545 Garretson Street, Rodeo.
- Carquinez Middle, grades 6 to 8, 286 students, 1099 Pomona Street, Crockett.
- John Swett High, grades 9 to 12, 351 students, 1098 Pomona Street, Crockett.
- Willow High, the district’s continuation high school.
Rodeo Hills is the only one of the four inside Rodeo. For middle and high school, plan on the drive or bus ride up to Pomona Street in Crockett.
How do I confirm the school for one address?
Call the district. Three steps before you fall for a house:
- Call JSUSD at (510) 245-4300 with the full street address and ask which schools it is assigned to.
- If the home is near the Hercules line, ask the district to confirm it is in JSUSD and not West Contra Costa Unified.
- Look at the JSUSD Boundary Map section on the district’s Transfer Office page at jsusd.org.
A listing, a map app or an agent’s word is not a boundary. The district is. Boundaries and assignments can change, so verify every time.
What do the state numbers say about each school?
These are the official numbers from the California School Dashboard, run by the California Department of Education. The 2025 Dashboard uses 2024 to 2025 school year data.
Test scores are shown as “distance from standard”: how many points the average score sits above or below the “Standard Met” level on the state tests. Chronic absenteeism is the share of K to 8 students who missed 10% or more of school days, so it is not reported for a 9 to 12 high school.
- Rodeo Hills Elementary: English 53.7 points below standard (up 4.9 points), math 82.1 below, chronic absenteeism 29.6%.
- Carquinez Middle: English 47.6 below (up 17.1 points), math 106.4 below (up 9.3 points), chronic absenteeism 22.6%.
- John Swett High: English 0.8 points above standard, math 78.5 below (up 15 points), graduation rate 90.7%, and 56% of graduates counted as “Prepared” on the College/Career measure.
- John Swett Unified, whole district: English 43.7 below (up 11.9 points), math 93.2 below (up 5.5 points), chronic absenteeism 27.3%, graduation rate 91.6%, 45.7% “Prepared.”
- California, all students: English 8.1 below, math 42.4 below, chronic absenteeism 17.1%, graduation rate 87.8%, 51.7% “Prepared.”

The honest read: English and math scores sit below the state average at every level, several are rising, and the high school’s graduation rate is above the state’s. One year is a snapshot. Open each school’s Dashboard page and look at the trend over several years before you decide what it means for you.
What about private rating sites?
GreatSchools, Niche and similar sites build their own ratings with their own methods. We don’t repeat their scores as fact. If you use them, read how each one works and compare it with the state’s Dashboard numbers above.
Can a student attend a school outside John Swett Unified?
Sometimes, through an inter-district transfer, but it is not automatic. JSUSD’s Transfer Office page says transfer requests start with your district of residence, and the district can deny a request when a program or grade is full or for budget reasons (JSUSD Transfer Office page, checked September 24, 2026). Don’t buy a house counting on a transfer. Ask both districts first.
