It depends on how you go, and there is no BART station in Pinole. By transit, most trips start with a WestCAT JPX or J bus, or AC Transit Line 70, to El Cerrito del Norte BART, and from there BART’s schedule shows about 9 minutes to Downtown Berkeley and about 32 minutes to Embarcadero in San Francisco. By car, you take I-80 and pay the $8.50 Bay Bridge toll to get into San Francisco, but not to get to Berkeley.
We won’t quote you a drive time, because no official source publishes a typical one and it changes by the hour. Below are the pieces you can actually check, and how to time your own trip.
How do I get from Pinole to BART?
Take a bus to El Cerrito del Norte BART, or drive there. Three routes run from Pinole:
- WestCAT JPX. An express bus from the Hercules Transit Center with Pinole stops at Pinole Valley Road at Sprouts and Fitzgerald Drive at Sizzler, then Richmond Parkway Transit Center and El Cerrito del Norte BART (WestCAT, Route JPX timetable, checked September 24, 2026). JPX runs Monday through Friday with carpool lane access and traffic signal priority (WestCAT, Express Bus to BART page, checked September 24, 2026).
- WestCAT Route J. A local route along San Pablo Avenue, with stops at Oak Ridge and at Tara Hills, then Hilltop, Richmond Parkway Transit Center and El Cerrito del Norte BART. It runs seven days a week (WestCAT, Route J timetable effective September 12, 2026).
- AC Transit Line 70. Runs from Appian Way and Fitzgerald Drive through Richmond to El Cerrito del Norte BART, with its other end at Richmond Parkway Transit Center (AC Transit, lines serving Pinole, checked September 24, 2026).
WestCAT’s adult cash fare for local and express buses is $1.75, and WestCAT takes Clipper (WestCAT Fares page, checked September 24, 2026). For AC Transit fares, check actransit.org.

Is there a bus from Pinole straight into San Francisco?
Not from a Pinole stop. The closest one-seat ride is WestCAT’s LYNX bus, which leaves from the Hercules Transit Center and goes to Salesforce Transit Center in downtown San Francisco. It runs weekdays from 5:00 a.m. to 9:05 p.m., with express lane access and Bay Bridge priority, on a schedule that started February 9, 2026 (WestCAT, LYNX page, checked September 24, 2026).
LYNX costs $5.00 one way in cash for riders 6 to 64, $50.00 for a 10-ride pass and $140.00 for a 31-day pass (WestCAT Fares page, checked September 24, 2026). From Pinole you’d drive to Hercules or ride WestCAT’s C3, which runs along San Pablo Avenue with stops at Oak Ridge, Sunnyview and Tara Hills and ends at the Hercules Transit Center in one direction (WestCAT, Route C3 timetable, checked September 24, 2026).

What does it cost to drive from Pinole to San Francisco or Berkeley?
To San Francisco, the fixed cost is the Bay Bridge toll: $8.50 for a two-axle car, paid westbound on the eastern side of the bridge (Bay Area FasTrak, San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge page, checked September 24, 2026). A two-axle car with 3 or more people pays $4.25 with a toll tag in the carpool lane, Monday to Friday, 5:00 to 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. (same source).
The toll keeps climbing. It goes to $9.00 with FasTrak on January 1, 2027, then rises each January through 2030, and it costs more if you pay by license plate account or by mail invoice (MTC, “New Bridge Toll Rates Now in Effect,” January 2, 2026).
To Berkeley, there’s no bridge to cross from Pinole. You pay in gas, time and parking.
How long is the drive?
Check it live instead of trusting anyone’s average, ours included:
- Open 511.org, the Bay Area’s public traveler information site, and look at I-80 speeds at the hour you’d leave.
- In your map app, set your real work address and arrival time on a weekday.
- Drive it once at that hour, from the actual street you’re thinking of buying on. A home off Appian Way and a home up Pinole Valley Road start from different on-ramps.
How do I test the commute before I buy?
Ride it once for real. Catch the JPX at Pinole Valley Road or the Line 70 on Fitzgerald Drive at the time you’d really leave, and time it door to door. Do the same drive on a Tuesday. If it only works on paper, better to know now.
