Drive, or ride a bus to BART. San Ramon has no BART station, so most transit commutes start with a short trip to Walnut Creek, Dublin/Pleasanton or West Dublin/Pleasanton, either by car or on one of County Connection’s three weekday BART express buses.

Which one works best depends on where your street is, where you work, and whether you can travel at peak hours. Here are the real options, with times and fares you can check.

Which BART stations are closest to San Ramon?

Three. Walnut Creek to the north up I-680, and Dublin/Pleasanton and West Dublin/Pleasanton to the south along I-580. All three run direct to San Francisco with no transfer. BART’s schedule for a sample weekday, Tuesday, October 6, 2026, shows (BART schedule and fare data, api.bart.gov, checked September 25, 2026):

Station Address Sample train to Embarcadero Ride Clipper fare
Walnut Creek 200 Ygnacio Valley Road, Walnut Creek 7:35 am, arrives 8:11 am 36 min $6.95
West Dublin/Pleasanton 6501 Golden Gate Drive, Dublin 7:34 am, arrives 8:16 am 42 min $7.85
Dublin/Pleasanton 5801 Owens Drive, Pleasanton 7:30 am, arrives 8:16 am 46 min $8.10

Walnut Creek has the shortest ride and the lowest fare to San Francisco. The two Dublin stations are closer to south San Ramon and Dougherty Valley. Clipper START riders pay about half: $3.45, $3.90 and $4.05 on those same trips.

What does BART parking cost at those stations?

Less at the Dublin stations. Both Dublin/Pleasanton and West Dublin/Pleasanton list a $3.40 daily fee, $5 a day for single or multi-day reserved spaces, and $93.80 a month for a reserved space. Walnut Creek charges $5 a day in its North Garage, $8 a day in the privately owned South Garage, and $136.50 a month for a reserved space. BART lists parking capacity at all three as available at all times (bart.gov station pages, checked September 25, 2026).

These buses are timed around Bishop Ranch workday hours. Check the timetable against your own schedule before you count on them.

How long is the full trip to San Francisco by bus and BART?

About an hour and a quarter on the sample trips below, before you add the walk or drive to the bus stop. Built from County Connection’s posted weekday timetables and BART’s schedule for Tuesday, October 6, 2026 (both checked September 25, 2026):

Route Leave San Ramon Transit Center Reach BART Train Arrive Embarcadero Fare, adult Clipper
96X to Walnut Creek 6:37 am 7:05 am 7:15 am 7:51 am $2.00 + $6.95
97X to Dublin/Pleasanton 6:38 am 7:01 am 7:10 am 7:56 am $2.00 + $8.10

Miss the 97X and the next one is an hour later. The 96X and 95X come every 30 minutes. Timetables change, so check County Connection and BART before your first day.

What about driving on I-680?

Most San Ramon commuters use I-680, and the express lanes matter. The I-680 Contra Costa Express Lanes run southbound from Marina Vista Avenue in Martinez to Alcosta Boulevard in San Ramon, and northbound from Alcosta Boulevard to Livorna Road in Walnut Creek. They operate Monday through Friday, 5 am to 8 pm. Every vehicle needs a FasTrak tag during those hours. Carpools of two or more ride free with a FasTrak Flex tag set to 2 or 3+, and solo drivers pay a toll that changes with traffic (511.org and Bay Area FasTrak, I-680 Contra Costa Express Lanes pages, checked September 25, 2026).

South of San Ramon, a new southbound express lane between Alcosta Boulevard and State Route 84 opened on February 13, 2026. Alameda CTC says no tolls will be charged in that stretch until tolling work is finished later this year (Alameda CTC, I-680 Express Lanes from SR-84 to Alcosta Boulevard page, checked September 25, 2026).

Drive times swing a lot by hour and direction, so we won’t quote one. Before you buy, check the trip on 511.org or a map app at the exact time you’d leave, on a weekday, from the street you’re looking at.

Can I bike to work or to BART from San Ramon?

For some trips, yes. The Iron Horse Trail runs north and south through San Ramon, and the City opened a bicycle and pedestrian bridge over Bollinger Canyon Road on July 19, 2025, replacing a signal crossing at one of the city’s busiest streets (City of San Ramon news, posted July 21, 2025). The City lists a second overcrossing at Crow Canyon Road on its bids page. Ride the route on a weekday before you plan a commute around it.

How should the commute change which San Ramon home I buy?

Match the house to the direction you travel most. A home near Bollinger Canyon Road or Crow Canyon Road puts you close to Bishop Ranch and the express bus stops. A Dougherty Valley home is closer to the Dublin stations and I-580 than to Walnut Creek. If you’ll drive to BART every day, put the parking fee and the extra ride time into your monthly cost next to the mortgage.
