San Pablo has no BART station, so most transit trips start with an AC Transit bus to Richmond BART, about 1.5 miles south, or El Cerrito del Norte BART, about three miles south (City of San Pablo, General Plan 2035 Circulation Element, adopted July 7, 2025). From Richmond, BART’s weekday schedule shows 25 minutes to 12th Street Oakland and 36 minutes to Embarcadero in San Francisco, before you add the bus ride.

The average San Pablo commute was about 32 minutes one way, and about 15% of trips took an hour or more (U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020 to 2024, via Census Reporter, checked September 24, 2026). Your trip depends on where you live in town and where you work. Here are the pieces you can check.

Which station should I use, Richmond or El Cerrito del Norte?

Whichever your bus reaches faster. Richmond is closer, but del Norte trains save about four minutes to San Francisco and 25 cents on the fare.

  • Richmond BART, 1700 Nevin Avenue in Richmond, between 19th and 20th Streets. It’s also a stop for Capitol Corridor, Amtrak San Joaquin and the California Zephyr, plus AC Transit and Golden Gate Transit buses (BART, Richmond station page, checked September 24, 2026).
  • El Cerrito del Norte BART, 6400 Cutting Boulevard in El Cerrito. Buses from AC Transit, Golden Gate Transit, WestCAT, SolTrans and Napa Vine stop there (BART, El Cerrito del Norte station page, checked September 24, 2026).

How long is the BART ride, and what does it cost?

These are BART’s scheduled ride times for weekday morning trains on Thursday, October 1, 2026, with the regular adult Clipper fare (BART schedule and fare data, checked September 24, 2026). The Richmond trains left at 7:31 and 7:44 a.m.; the del Norte trains at 7:35 and 7:48 a.m.

Going to From Richmond From El Cerrito del Norte
Downtown Berkeley 13 min, $2.55 9 min, $2.55
12th Street Oakland City Center 24 to 26 min, $3.80 20 to 22 min, $3.35

Montgomery Street, San Francisco 37 to 38 min, $6.15 33 to 34 min, $5.90

Some of those trips include a transfer. Senior and disabled Clipper fares from Richmond to Embarcadero are $2.30, and Clipper START and youth fares are $3.05 (same source). BART changes fares and schedules, so check bart.gov for the day you’ll ride.

What is the Contra Costa College Transit Center?

It’s San Pablo’s main bus hub. The City describes it as a timed transfer stop on the Contra Costa College campus, near the Student Association and Vocational buildings, where buses are scheduled to meet (City of San Pablo, General Plan 2035 Circulation Element). Lines 71, 72, 74 and 76 all serve the college.

It’s also where WestCAT starts its one route in town. WestCAT’s C3 runs weekdays between Contra Costa College and the Hercules Transit Center along San Pablo Avenue, with stops at Tara Hills, Sunnyview and Oak Ridge (WestCAT, Route C3 schedule effective September 12, 2026). WestCAT’s cash fare is $1.75, or $1.00 when you transfer from AC Transit (WestCAT, All Fares page, checked September 24, 2026).

Can I park at the BART station?

Yes, at both. Daily parking is $3.40 at Richmond and at El Cerrito del Norte. Reserved single-day parking is $4.50 at Richmond and $5.00 at del Norte, and monthly reserved is $93.80 at either. BART lists both lots as having space available at all times (BART station parking information, checked September 24, 2026). Pay through the BART Official app.

What if I drive?

To San Francisco, you’ll pay the Bay Bridge toll westbound. It’s $8.50 for a two-axle car in 2026, or $4.25 for a carpool of three or more with FasTrak in the carpool lane on weekdays from 5 to 10 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m. The FasTrak toll rises to $9.00 in 2027 (MTC, “New Bridge Toll Rates Now in Effect,” January 2, 2026, and MTC’s 2026 Toll Increase page, checked September 24, 2026).

We won’t guess at a drive time. Check I-80 and I-580 speeds on 511.org at the hour you’d leave, then drive it once on a weekday from the street you’re considering.

Is anything changing for San Pablo transit?

Maybe, but nothing is funded to open on a date. The City is working with AC Transit and the West Contra Costa Transportation Commission on the feasibility of Bus Rapid Transit on San Pablo Avenue, with a study underway as of 2025. The City’s Contra Costa College Mobility Hub Plan also sketches transit and street improvements around the campus (City of San Pablo, General Plan 2035 Circulation Element). Treat both as plans, not service.

How do I test the commute before I buy?

Do it once, for real, on a weekday.

  1. Find the closest stop for Lines 70, 71, 72, 74, 76 or L to the home.
  2. Ride at the hour you’d really leave and time it to your desk.
  3. Try the other station on the way home. Some streets are closer to a del Norte bus than a Richmond one.
  4. If you’ll drive to BART, get there at your real time and see where you can park.
