Spring, if you only look at the calendar. Nationally, homes that sold in March, April and May earned the biggest premiums over their estimated value from 2015 through 2025 (ATTOM, April 30, 2026), and Contra Costa County single-family homes sold fastest in the spring of 2026 (C.A.R. monthly reports, 2026).

But the calendar is the smallest part of it. The best time to sell your Walnut Creek house is the month it’s ready, priced to the homes it competes with, and lined up with your next move.

What does national data say about the best month?

Spring leads, and fall trails. ATTOM looked at more than 52 million single-family and condo sales from 2015 through 2025 and compared each sale price with the home’s estimated value. Sales in March brought the largest premium, 10.7%, followed by April and May at 10.2%. September and October were lowest, at 8.0% and 7.9% (ATTOM, “Best Days to Sell a Home,” April 30, 2026, checked September 24, 2026).

Notice two things. Every month still averaged a premium. And the gap between the best month and the worst is under 3 points, nationwide. A pricing mistake on your house can cost more than that.

How fast have Contra Costa homes sold, month by month?

Fastest in spring, slower in late summer and midwinter. These are C.A.R.’s median days on market for existing single-family homes in Contra Costa County, as reported in each monthly release (C.A.R., monthly home sales and price reports, checked September 24, 2026):

Month Median days on market
September 2025 22
October 2025 19
November 2025 22
December 2025 21
January 2026 29
February 2026 13
March 2026 13
April 2026 12
May 2026 13
June 2026 13
July 2026 15
August 2026 20

This is county data for single-family homes only, so it covers Antioch to Orinda, not just Walnut Creek, and it leaves out condos and co-ops. Use it for the shape of the year, not as a Walnut Creek number. The 2025 releases show the same shape: 12 days in March 2025, stretching to 21 by August 2025.

What were Walnut Creek homes doing in August 2026?

Selling near asking, in about four weeks. In August 2026, Walnut Creek homes of all types sold in a median 28 days at 99.7% of list price. 36.3% sold above list, and 32.1% of listings had a price drop along the way (Redfin, Walnut Creek housing market page, August 2026, checked September 24, 2026).

Walnut Creek’s figure includes condos and co-ops, so it isn’t a direct match for the county single-family number above. A condo or a Rossmoor manor and a detached house can be on very different clocks in the same month.

Should I wait for spring to sell?

Only if waiting fits your life. Spring has the edge in the data. Waiting also means more months of mortgage, taxes and upkeep, and nobody knows what rates or prices will do by then. If you’re ready now and priced to the market, homes sell in every month in the table above.

The window that often gets missed: list in late winter so you’re on the market as spring buyers start. National premiums were already 10.0% for February sales (ATTOM, April 30, 2026), and Contra Costa’s median days on market dropped to 13 in February 2026 (C.A.R.).

Is fall or winter a bad time to sell in Walnut Creek?

Not bad, just slower. Contra Costa single-family homes took a median 19 to 22 days to sell from September through December 2025, and 29 days in January 2026 (C.A.R.). If you need to sell in the fall, price it right on day one. There’s less time before the holidays to recover from a price cut.

What beats good timing?

The parts that are up to you.

  1. Price. In August 2026, 32.1% of Walnut Creek listings had a price drop (Redfin). Pricing to the homes you compete with from day one is the part you control.
  2. Condition. A house with no surprises for the inspector gives buyers fewer reasons to ask for credits, in any season. Our Walnut Creek selling answer walks through repairs and costs.
  3. Your next move. Selling and buying at once? Then your calendar is set by the purchase, not by the season. Tools like a rent-back or a contingent offer can cover the gap; talk them through with your agent and a real estate attorney before you commit.

Questions people also ask

What month do homes sell for the most?

Nationally, March. ATTOM’s study of more than 52 million sales from 2015 through 2025 found March sales brought a 10.7% premium over estimated value, with April and May close behind at 10.2%, per its April 30, 2026 release. Those are sale months, so the homes mostly listed a few weeks earlier. Walnut Creek month-by-month premiums aren’t published in that study.

How long does it take to sell a house in Walnut Creek?

In August 2026, the median Walnut Creek home sold in 28 days, per Redfin’s Walnut Creek housing market page, checked September 24, 2026. That covers all home types, including condos and co-ops. Contra Costa County single-family homes took a median 20 days that month, per C.A.R. Your own timeline depends mostly on price and condition.

Is it bad to sell a house in Walnut Creek around the holidays?

No, but it can be slower. Contra Costa County single-family homes sold in a median 21 to 22 days in November and December 2025, and 29 days in January 2026, per C.A.R.’s monthly reports. Supply was thin too: the county’s unsold inventory index fell to 1.9 months in December 2025. Price it right from the first day, since there’s less time to adjust.

Do Rossmoor homes sell on the same schedule as the rest of Walnut Creek?

We don’t have a sourced Rossmoor-only figure by month, so we won’t guess. Rossmoor manors are co-ops, condos and a few single-family homes, and the Walnut Creek numbers Redfin reports mix them with everything else in the city. Ask your agent for recent sales in your own Mutual to see how long similar manors took.
